Why October Is a Good Time for a Late-Season Equipment Maintenance Check

September 1, 2026

By October, paving equipment has already put in months of hard work—but the season isn’t over yet. With more jobs still ahead, this is an ideal time for contractors to take a closer look at their equipment, address accumulated wear and buildup, and make sure everything is ready for the final stretch.

A late-season maintenance check can help crews catch potential problems before they lead to unnecessary downtime while keeping equipment working efficiently through the remainder of paving season.

Check What the Busy Summer Left Behind

Long days, high temperatures, abrasive materials, and demanding jobsite conditions can take their toll on paving equipment. By fall, even equipment that has received routine daily care may benefit from a more thorough inspection.

Take time to look for loose fasteners, leaks, worn or damaged components, and other signs that something may need attention. Fluids, belts, chains, lubrication points, conveyors, augers, and the screed should also be checked according to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

Routine inspections matter because identifying smaller issues early can help prevent them from becoming bigger problems during a job.

Don’t Let Asphalt Buildup Accumulate

Cleaning should also be a major part of an October maintenance check.

Asphalt left behind on a paver can harden around important components and make future cleanup more difficult. Industry maintenance guidance recommends removing excess asphalt at the end of each workday, particularly around material-handling components and the screed. A clean machine also makes it easier for operators to visually identify potential maintenance problems.

For stubborn asphalt and tar buildup, Bitu-Ox™ 400 can be incorporated into your equipment cleaning routine to help break down material and simplify cleanup.

Don’t forget smaller tools, either. Shovels, hand tampers, rakes, and other frequently used tools can accumulate significant buildup over months of paving.

Pay Attention to What Your Operators Notice

The people using equipment every day are often the first to notice when something feels different.

Unusual noises, changes in steering, leaks, inconsistent operation, or visible wear are worth investigating rather than putting off until the season slows down. Operator feedback combined with a thorough equipment walk-around can provide a better picture of what needs attention.

Finish the Season Strong

October isn’t necessarily time to put the equipment away. For many paving crews, there’s still work to be done.

Think of a late-season maintenance check as an opportunity to assess what months of demanding work have done to your equipment before heading into the final stretch. Clean accumulated buildup, inspect high-use components, address smaller maintenance concerns, and make sure tools and equipment are prepared for the weeks ahead.

A little extra attention now can help your crew stay ready through the remainder of paving season—and make the eventual transition into offseason maintenance easier.

Keep your equipment ready for the work ahead with Bitu-Ox™ 400.
