Preparing Your Heavy Equipment for Spring

March 16, 2022

As the temperature starts to rise, new jobs will begin to roll in. You’ve probably had your equipment stored for the winter, so now is the time to start preparing your equipment for the busy springtime season ahead. Below we have compiled a few tips on how to ready your equipment for the upcoming busy season.

Check The Owner’s Manual

First, you should always know where the owner’s manual is for each piece of equipment so that you can refer to it as needed. Your owner’s manual contains information on the specific make and model of your equipment, including seasonal maintenance recommendations, and the types of products you should use with your equipment.  Keep your owner’s manuals where you can easily locate them. Consider making a binder for them and keep it in your office. You can even use the owner’s manual as the place where you keep notes on the maintenance performed and repairs done on each piece of equipment you own.

Inspect Your Machines

Walk around your equipment and perform a thorough inspection to check for signs of wear or damage. You never know what might have happened in storage to cause your equipment to malfunction. You’ll also want to look for pest infestation.  Rats, mice, and other small animals have a habit of turning your equipment into their home over the winter, so you’ll need to clear them. Consider placing rodent traps in or around your machinery during the winter months to help prevent this.

Reinstall the Battery

It’s a good idea when winterizing your heavy equipment to remove the battery from the engine and place it in a warm, dry area on a charger to keep them topped up. A battery that is left in a piece of equipment for months in the cold is likely to be dead when you try to turn the engine over. Now is the time to reinstall your battery to check that it is functioning properly and that all the connections are strong.

Lubricate Parts

After months in storage, the moving parts on your equipment are bound to be a bit stiff. Even if you applied a lubricant in the fall, you’ll need to do it again to ensure that every part of your engine and equipment can perform its full range of motion.

Clean Your Equipment

Although you may have cleaned your equipment before storing it for the winter, you’ll want to do so again before hitting the jobsite. During the winter months, your equipment may have collected dirt, grime, and other debris. You may also come across things that were missed when winterizing your equipment.
